I do suggest that customers consider a website that is standards-compliant and cross-browser compatible. Why? Because not everyone will view your site on the exact same kind of computer that you use, nor will they always have a high-speed internet connection, flash or sound. Flashy stuff can sometimes look cool and serve a purpose, but a clean and fast loading web site is usually to your advantage. This approach will also help a great deal with SEO (i.e. how people find you when using Google or Yahoo! to search the web.)
